چکیده

We compared tree growth and crown condition with soil and foliar elemental composition in 14 sugar maple (Acer saccharumMarsh.) stands in VT, USA, to evaluate if deficiencies or imbalances in cation nutrition were associated with growth and health reductions in native stands. The Till Source Model (TSM) was used to select study sites potentially high or low in calcium (Ca) by predicting the relative Ca concentration of soil parent material derived from glacial till. The TSM successfully identified high or low levels of soil Ca (P = 0.031) and foliar Ca (P = 0.011) among stands. Although soil Ca, potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe) concentrations were all associated with stand growth and health, the influence of K, P, and Fe on health appeared indirect and potentially a result of autocorrelations between Ca and these nutrients. The only cases where improved health coincided with increased soil element content involved Ca and molar ratios of Ca and aluminum (Al). Among foliar nutrients, significant relationships with elevated branch dieback were only found for low foliar Ca (P = 0.021) and high foliar Al (P = 0.035). Average annual basal area growth during the decade prior to sampling was lower for trees in stands with low foliar Ca (P = 0.050) and high foliar Al (P = 0.017). These data emphasize the importance of Ca and Al to sugar maple health and highlight the vulnerability of sugar maple stands to declines in growth and vigor following continued anthropogenic Ca depletion. A Survey of Sugar Maple Nutrition in Vermont and its Implications for the Fertilization of Sugar Maple Stands

Can fertilization of sugar maple stands lead to increased diameter growth, better crown conditions, and/or added sugar production? We have wrestled questions like these for over a decade at research sites in northwest Vermont. Recently we have begun to expand our understanding of maple nutrition by examining stands in a wider geographic area. The effectiveness of fertilization depends in large ...

Calcium and aluminum impacts on sugar maple physiology in a northern hardwood forest.

Forests of northeastern North America have been exposed to anthropogenic acidic inputs for decades, resulting in altered cation relations and disruptions to associated physiological processes in multiple tree species, including sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.). In the current study, the impacts of calcium (Ca) and aluminum (Al) additions on mature sugar maple physiology were evaluated at the...

Long-term calcium addition increases growth release, wound closure, and health of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) trees at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

We surveyed and wounded forest-grown sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) trees in a long-term, replicated Ca manipulation study at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, USA. Plots received applications of Ca (to boost Ca availability above depleted ambient levels) or Al (to compete with Ca uptake and further reduce Ca availability). We found significantly greater total foliar ...

Sugar maple growth in relation to nutrition and stress in the northeastern United States.

Sugar maple, Acer saccharum, decline disease is incited by multiple disturbance factors when imbalanced calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) act as predisposing stressors. Our objective in this study was to determine whether factors affecting sugar maple health also affect growth as estimated by basal area increment (BAI). We used 76 northern hardwood stands in northern Pennsylvania...

Maple tap spot is one of the fungal diseases which has been infected maple trees. Early deciduous, the disappearance of leaf, reduction of growth, seed and wood production of maple trees are resulted due to this disease. The objective of this research was isolation and identification of the pathogen on leaves of Acer velutinum in Dr. Bahramnia educational and research forest (Shast-Kalateh of ...
